KUH NeuroCenter consists of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and the national Kuopio Epilepsy Center at the Kuopio University Hospital. The mission of KUH Neurosurgery is to provide full acute (7/24) and elective neurosurgical consultation and treatment services for the KUH catchment population in Middle and Eastern Finland.

We perform 2.200 acute and elective operations per year for our unselected population, providing a virtually full spectrum of neurosurgical subspecialities and operations. Over 40% of cases are acute. We have state of the art OR facilities (microscopes; neuronavigation; IOM and brain mapping; DBS; endoscopy; etc). We are supported at KUH by NeuroICU, Neuroradiology and Endovascular Surgery, Clinical Neurophysiology IOM Group, Kuopio Epilepsy Center, and CyberKnife of Radiation Oncology, etc.

Multidisciplinary groups

We daily meet with neuroradiologists, neurologist and neurointensivists on acute and neuroICU care. We collaborate in multidisciplinary groups, including weekly Neurovascular, Neuro-Oncology and Spine Groups.

Our staff consists of 12 neurosurgeons, including Full Professor and 4 Associate Professors.

Medical Students
We provide neurosurgical education for UEF medical students as well as foreign exchange students during neurosurgery week (after neurology course) with bedside, OR and NeuroICU teaching in Finnish or English.

We have 4 positions for full national board-certified specialization in neurosurgery, valid in EU. Our residents participate in Scandinavian and European ( training cycles.

Research and Development

We are very active in research and development. We provide a full PhD training program in clinical and applied neuroresearch, and currently supervise 15 PhD Students in our research groups.
