NeuroCenter consists of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and the national Kuopio Epilepsy Center at the Kuopio University Hospital.
The mission of KUH
Neurosurgery is to provide full acute (7/24) and elective neurosurgical
consultation and treatment services for the KUH catchment population in
and Eastern Finland.
perform 2.200 acute and elective operations per year for our unselected
population, providing a virtually full spectrum of neurosurgical
subspecialities and operations. Over 40% of cases are acute. We have
the art OR facilities (microscopes; neuronavigation; IOM and brain
endoscopy; etc). We are supported at KUH by NeuroICU, Neuroradiology
Endovascular Surgery, Clinical Neurophysiology IOM Group, Kuopio Epilepsy Center, and CyberKnife of Radiation Oncology, etc.
We daily meet with neuroradiologists, neurologist and neurointensivists on acute and neuroICU care. We collaborate in multidisciplinary groups, including weekly Neurovascular, Neuro-Oncology and Spine Groups.
staff consists of 12 neurosurgeons, including Full Professor and 4 Associate Professors.
We provide neurosurgical education for UEF medical students as well as foreign exchange students during neurosurgery week (after neurology course) with bedside, OR and NeuroICU teaching in Finnish or English.
have 4 positions for full national board-certified specialization in neurosurgery, valid in EU. Our residents participate in Scandinavian and European (www.eans.org) training cycles.

Research and Development
We are very active in research and development. We provide a full PhD training program in clinical and applied neuroresearch, and currently supervise 15 PhD Students in our research groups.
